Boiler Gas Meter Pressure Test — What It Is and Why It Matters

When Testing Is Needed

Gas meter pressure testing is performed: when installing a new boiler (to verify adequate supply pressure), when the boiler is not firing or has weak flames, when other gas appliances are simultaneously underperforming, or when the gas utility suspects a supply issue.

The Test Procedure

A technician attaches a manometer to the gas meter test port, measures static pressure (gas flowing to no appliances), then measures dynamic pressure with the boiler and other appliances running. The pressure drop between static and dynamic should not exceed 0.5 inches water column.

Interpreting Results

If dynamic pressure is below 5 inches water column for natural gas, the gas supply may be undersized. Solutions include: upsizing the gas line from the meter, adding a higher capacity regulator, or reducing the total connected load. Undersized gas supply can cause poor boiler performance and sooting.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
