Boiler Gas Valve Sticking — Causes and Repair

Symptoms

A sticking gas valve can cause: boiler not firing (stuck closed), boiler firing intermittently (partially stuck), boiler not shutting off (stuck open — dangerous), or burner flame fluctuating. A gas valve that sticks open is a safety hazard — unburned gas can accumulate.

Causes

Corrosion from age and moisture, debris in the valve mechanism, solenoid coil failure, or electrical issues (control board not sending correct voltage). A technician tests the valve coil resistance and mechanical operation to determine the cause.

Repair vs Replacement

Gas valves are typically replaced rather than repaired — internal components are not serviceable. Replacement cost: $400-800 for the valve plus $150-300 labour. Only licensed gas fitters should replace gas valves.
