What the PRV Does

The pressure relief valve (PRV) is a critical safety device that opens if boiler pressure exceeds 30 PSI (2 bar). It prevents the boiler from exploding due to overpressure. If the PRV is leaking or failing, it compromises boiler safety.

Signs of PRV Failure

Water dripping from the PRV discharge pipe, water spraying from the pipe when the boiler runs, the PRV fails to reseat after opening, or visible corrosion around the valve. A leaking PRV usually indicates high system pressure — check the expansion tank before replacing the valve.

Replacement Cost

PRV replacement costs $200-400 including the valve ($30-80) and labour ($150-300). The system must be partially drained to replace the valve. If the underlying issue (high pressure from a failed expansion tank) is not addressed, the new valve will also leak.
