HVAC and Health — Complete Indoor Air Quality Checklist for Vancouver

Air Filtration
Use MERV 11-13 filters for better particle capture (check furnace compatibility). Replace filters monthly during heavy use. Consider a whole-home air purifier (UV or HEPA bypass system). Vacuum supply registers and return grilles regularly. Keep the area around the furnace clean to prevent dust from being pulled into the return air.
Humidity Control
Maintain 40-50% relative humidity. Below 35%: dry skin, scratchy throat, static electricity. Above 55%: mould growth, dust mites, window condensation. Use a humidifier in winter (furnace-mounted or portable). Use a dehumidifier in summer (portable or whole-home). A heat pump or AC naturally reduces summer humidity. Monitor humidity with a digital hygrometer.
Ventilation and Fresh Air
Run the furnace fan periodically (even in mild weather) to circulate and filter air. Consider an HRV/ERV for continuous fresh air exchange. Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans when cooking and showering (but sparingly in winter to retain heat). Open windows for 5-10 minutes daily when outdoor air quality is good. Schedule annual HVAC maintenance to ensure the system is clean and operating properly.
